AP Tox / PET General Toxicology Course - Lisbon

The Portuguese Toxicology Association (AP Tox) in collaboration with the Dutch Postgraduate Education in Toxicology (P.E.T) invite you to participate on this course on General Toxicology.


The course is designed to provide a basic training in toxicology. It offers participants seeking vocational training but lacking formal undergraduate training in toxicology the opportunity to obtain extensive, basic theoretical knowledge and insights in this field.


On successful completion of this course, participants will have acquired basic knowledge and understanding of the general principles of toxicology and basic insight in the application of toxicology in hazard and risk assessment. 


The course corresponds to 3 ECTS credits, and is ERT Certified.


This course is one of the many courses that make up the P.E.T programme. This programme is a co-operation of eight Dutch universities. It is designed to offer participants the theoretical toxicology knowledge necessary for registration as a toxicologist, both with the Netherlands Society of Toxicology (NVT) and with EUROTOX.  


Who should attend?

  • Industrial and government professionals involved in chemical/drug risk assessment. It is especially relevant for those working with REACH, CLP, Biocides, Plant Pesticides and Cosmetic Regulations, as well as food and drug safety.
  • Researchers and students who intend to become involved in chemical/drug risk assessment.
  • Individuals who intend to register at toxicologist with EUROTOX and various national toxicology registration bodies.


Course Content

This course is a combination of e-learning, tutorials and examination. All communication is in English. The course consists of over twenty lectures on various subjects, given by experts in those subjects. The scientific co-ordinator of this course is Prof. Dr. Bas Blaauboer.


During September to December 2013, participants have online access to the training material for self-study and direct contact with a tutor when additional clarification is required. On the 11th December 2013, candidates can attend a full day face-to-face tutorial in Lisbon with the course co ordinator. It is followed by a written open book examination on the next day, which also takes place in Lisbon. The exam is in English and is composed of 10 questions that must be completed within 3 hours. Exam questions focus on insight rather than factual knowledge. Candidates passing the exam will receive the P.E.T certificate.
